Mulnayak: 33 cms high, parikaryukt, white-colored idol of
Bhagawan Ravan Parshvanath in the Padmasana posture.
Tirth: It is in the Alvar city.
Historicity: There is a story regarding the creation of this
tirth. Ravana, the king of Lanka observed the vow of taking meals only after worshipping
God. Once he was going in a plane to a foreign country. When it was time for lunch, he
landed near Alvar to take rest. He remembered the vow of worshipping God but he had
forgetten to bring the idol with him. In order to keep the vow, Mandodari made an idol of
sand and installed it with life by reciting the mantra of Namaskar. Having worshipped God
with devotion, Ravan and Mandodari kept their vow. By virtue of the vow and
Mandodari’s chastity, the presiding deity made the idol adamantine. Thus, the idol of
Parshvanathji worshipped by mandodari and Ravan began to be known as ‘Shri Ravan
Parshvanath.’ This ancient temple survived till the fifteenth century. Then in the
year 1654 of the Vikram era, this new temple was built and the idol was reinstalled in the
year 1983 of the Vikram era. Ravan Parshvanath is mentioned in many ancient scriptures and
tirthmalas written from the year 1422 to the year 1689 of the Vikram era.
Other Temples: There are no other temples.
Works of art and Sculpture: This is a very ancient and famous tirth. It spreads
all around the fragrance of the firm vow of Ravan. Comparisons with the sun, the moon, the
mirror, the lotus flower etc. fall short of describing the beautiful face of Bhagawan
Parshvanath Swami. It is believed that this Alvar tirth was settled by King Alvar in the
tenth century of the Vikram era and it was named after the king. This temple has a terrace
and no pinnacle.
Guidelines: The railway station of Alvar, a chief city of
Rajasthan, is at a distance of 3 kilometers from the temple. Bus service and private
vehicles are available. boarding and lodging provisions are there.
